By Adam Ak'Bhar
I'm reasonably convinced that anyone that gave this item more than 1 star is being paid by Toshiba. I couldn't recommend this less. If anti-stars existed, I would give this item 5/5 negative stars. The one good thing about this hard drive is that it's incredibly amazing that it sucks this bad.Disconnects every minute and a half? Check.Reloads address bar after every file selection? Check.Takes 15 minutes to delete a notepad file? Check.Frozen for 10 minutes only to tell you none of your files were transferred? CheckThis product is Hal at the END of Space Odyssey. If you see this, run. Get as far away as possible.P.S. Good luck trying to find a way to contact customer support.

I actually got this unit from a local Walmart. It was about 58 dollars, and the plan was for it to hold my excess media files so I could free up space on my computer and/or transfer them to auxiliary machines. While the unit claims to have "automatic back up software," it doesn't seem to actually back up many systems. When using it on my machine (a TOSHIBA SATELLITE using an NTSF format) a message always popped up that there was an error, and the drive would NOT be able to back up files. Trust me, you'll have to do it manually (and most likely you won't be able to create a bootable backup disc image, which is what the unit claims to be able to do).Transfer rates differ from computer to computer, and sometimes on the same rig (yes I tested this). Transferring my video file folders (approximately 160gb) would take half an hour sometimes and four hours other times on the same computer. The low score however isn't for these problem alone. I purchased the hard drive in late December but by Early February the USB 3.0 port began malfunctioning, and I would have to turn the unit upside down to get the surmised short (I expect it was a short in the circuit but I haven't opened it in order to avoid voiding any warranty there might be).Overall some pros of this product are as follows:+Fairly easy to use. People who are not very computer savvy may be able to have some success with this product (it's really just the luck of the draw with your unit+The connection chord is fairly thick so it's unlikely that you'll have problems with that part+The port on the hard drive itself is USB 3.0 so you'll have faster transfer rates (sometimes)Cons:- I cannot guarantee that unit will have a very long lifetime (after a few months I'm already having problems with it)- The connection cable is pretty short... If you are using it on a desktop tower or even an all in one monitor, you may run into some issues.- There is not a guarantee that this unit can actually be used to back up your computer (I haven't delve into the problem as I only needed it to hold my media files)- Diskspace errors and fragmentation happen rather frequently (I disconnected the unit safely every time I used it and still had these issues)I think this product can be great for the basics of having back up files, and storing data in the short term, but if you are looking for a long term solution, you may want to look elsewhere.---Edit--------Now in March, the Unit has COMPLETELY stopped responding. It won't boot right side up, upside down, or any other way. I'm wondering if this is a problem exclusive to Toshiba's brand or all Portable hard disc drives.

By *Mieko*
I bought this at WalMart. If I could review the clerk who sold it to me, I would give him -5 stars.First my credentials lest you think I just don't understand this little loser...I have used computers for 17 years, and have had 3 back up drives, all SeaGate. They work basically like flashdrives. You turn them on and the page opens up and you create folders. I have filled all of these back up drives, my HD on this desktop is much larger and I have too much stuff on it. So I wanted an external HD that I could use to CHOOSE what I wanted to back up..plus the monthly Windows HD Back up.I specifically asked the clerk if I would get a 'page' to create folders on, and he said 'yes.'He then began trying to teach me Windows Basics which I learned with he was around 7 years old.I drove 200 miles round trip to buy this bit of junk. The next morning I plugged it in; the green light went on and I guess the drive was backing up my hard drive.OK..that's good, I thought. But I got messages saying that the drive wasn't recognized by Win7 though it purports to work on Win7. There was no way for me to 'install' this drive, though the clerk assured me there IS no installation, since it is Plug and Play. It just ground along doing nothing.Nowhere could I click on a drive that opened a page for me to transfer movies or music or pictures. I guess it just backs up my PC drive, which actually only takes 75 Gigabytes, since anything else I want to save wouldn't be included.I will have to drive another 200 miles round trip to return this bummer. The reviews on the Toshiba web page are so bad I was sorry I hadn't known earlier, and saved myself this grief.Maybe I can help save someone else the same problems now. If you are wavering in your purchase, go to the Toshiba website and read the reviews.DON'T BUY THIS!!!!
