This hard drive is gorgeous... as usually Sony makes beautiful products. The hard drive is made of brushed heavy black aluminum and it looks like it's made with top quality materials.While the hardware is wonderful looking, as usual Sony mucks it up with catastrophic software. I would recommend this hard drive only if you are planning to use it as a simple drag and drop hard drive and erase the awful software this comes with.I made the mistake of trying to use the security software included. When installing, it asks you how much hard drive space you want to use as an open hard drive and how much you want to use as secured storage. I chose to use the entire hard drive as secured storage and it was over. No going back... once you add the security feature there is no way to erase the hard drive and start from scratch. It is forever stamped. The software had no options on changing the partitioning options. It would only let you change your password. It is also impossible to erase the hard drive because the security software "hides" the secured portion of the hard drive so if you try to format the hard drive it only formats the 100mb left on the hard drive as it cannot see or access the secured portion of the hard drive. This would be awesome if the security software worked but.... the software completely crash every time I tried to access the hard drive. This software basically bricked the hard drive. Sony should be ashamed of themselves for including software capable of bricking the hard drive.I seriously could not believe Sony included this software in good conscience. Sony is known for awful software but they have made improvements in recent years. This software once again takes them back.Had this hard drive shipped without any preloaded software, I might have given it four or five stars but the software left a bad taste in my mouth and I decided to return the brick. Fair warning to potential buyers. Erase the software.

The 500 GB AV Link External HDD is compatible with some newer TVs. It is formatted in FAT32 format, as opposed to NTFS in the regular 500 GB HDDs. So, the AV Link version may not be as good as those using NTFS in terms of reliability, and file performance, but FAT32 format gives the AV Link good compatibility with many devices ranging from those produced in the 1980s to the ones nowadays. However, the FAT32 format may require the hard drive to be reformatted to accommodate audio-visual equipment. Included in the package are the AV Link hard drive, USB 3.0 cord(compatible also with USB 2.0), and a file transmission cord that be attached to SONY cameras and so on for data transmission. I use the hard drive for general purposes such as keeping computer back-ups, storing videos, music, and documents. It has worked fine so far. As the above review says, there are some software included in the hard drive. There are specifically: Backup Manager, Data Transfer Accelerator, FAT32 formatter, Password Protection Manager. They may be useful. However, I think that for general purposes I don't have to use them. So, the portable HDD is to me a good device that meets general needs well, but the advanced software that comes with it may be too technical and confusing for general consumers. For this reason, I will give it four stars.

I bought this thinking I would have backup of new iPad. As soon as I plugged it in the iPad said something like "Device requires too much power" so I was out of luck. I can use it with my Toshiba laptop with no problems and would recommend it.
