By ptrlng
The first time I inserted the drive my computer wouldn't recognize it. Went into Disk Utility and had multiple errors trying to reformat. Was finally able to reformat. However, when I switched to Firewire after formatting via USB, I get the same problem where the computer won't recognize the drive. I reformat again, with the drive connected via Firewire. It's able to reformat and the drive works, but when I switch back to USB, the drive again doesn't work. Beyond frustrating.2012.12.01 UpdateContacted G-Tech support. They stated this is a known issue that requires an updated firmware. I installed the firmware and now the drive now works as expected.

By Adam Vasilakis
I have never been a big fan of eSATA. I've often found the connection unreliable when dealing with cards that are compatible with OSX especially. After using it for several years, I realized that the connection was only as good as your interface card (PCI-Xpress in this instance) and your interface card's software/firmware. The Intel MAC in our other office has an eSATA card that will only recognize new drives with a complete reboot and the drives are interpreted as internal drives and difficult to eject properly without a complete shutdown. The Sonnet eSATA card on my Mac Pro works like a champ with four ports and eject in 3s after right-clicking on the drive and choosing eject. All of the above is relevant because G-Technology has chosen to discontinue their eSATA/USB 2.0 drives and replace them with these drives which have no eSATA. Your experience with any USB 3.0 device on a MAC will only be as good as your interface card in most instances. G-Drives have always contained Hitachi DeskStar drives. And I do know that the professional Apple approved companies on the East Coast that supply Video Workstations for us and other companies on the East Coast (Mac Business Solutions etc) ALWAYS use Hitachi drives inside the Mac Pro...often using several Hitachi's to create a small RAID0 internal drive. After a lot of research, Ive determined that I couldn't go wrong with the "Highpoint Io Card Rocketu Quad Usb 3.0 4Port Raid 4Xpci Express For Mac Ru1144Am Class-Leading" USB 3.0 card. It is made especially for MAC PRO's and has FOUR USB 3.0 ports. And the new G-Drives run very fast. They are recognized quicker and eject faster. I am a bit surprised that a product that comes pre-formatted for the MAC would drop eSATA completely to add USB 3.0. There just aren't that many USB 3.0 cards for the MAC that work really well yet.But lets be honest....if you are in a rush and only have a small number of files to transfer, those FW800 plugs are still just as handy as ever. But for those long transfers that people will use with this 4TB device, make sure you have a good and properly working USB 3.0 Card in your MAC before you assume that the G-Drive is the cause of all your troubles.

By Ryan R. Moos
If you have Mountain Lion and the part number of your drive is 0G02537, make sure you do a FIRMWARE UPDATE prior to using this drive, otherwise you can run into fatal disk formatting issues related to firewire (it would seem) that will render the disk unreadable. You CANNOT do the firmware update with data on the drive. the firmware update will ERASE the data on the drive.I am rating this ONE star because G-Tech, who I've trusted for years, should have dealt with this correction long before Mountain Lion arrived, as all key 3rd party manufacturers get advanced copies of Operating Systems for reasons such as these.Shameful.G-tech - if you are reading this, and can place the blame on Apple (for example, they did NOT give you an advanced copy of mountain lion) please share you point of view.I have asked G-tech to ship me THREE replacement drives. Depending on how they handle this, I may raise the star rating.
