I have 3 of these (two 500GB and one 1TB). I am a computer expert and have been building/running computers since before DOS.This 1TB model uses the Toshiba MQ01ABD100 hard disk inside. It is a two platter drive and is rather typical (sound/performance) of the 500GB per platter 5400RPM drives out there. Nothing special.UNFORTUNATELY, all of these Toshiba Automatic Backup drives use some absolute garbage asmedia USB 3.0 controller daughter card. I am running into massive problems on all these enclosures using USB 3.0 with both on-board (Intel Core i5 Marvell chipset) controllers and PCIe controllers (TI chipset based). These range from continuous connects/disconnects, random disconnects, file corruption, weird chkdsk errors, etc. From the symptoms, I believe there are basic flaws in the way the USB 3.0 stack is implemented on this chipset/firmware. Usually, it manifests itself in weird timeouts, but ultimately data corruption. Alternatively (and risky), you could use this as ONLY a USB 2.0 drive. It does seem to work OK under USB 2.0. You take your chances of losing your data if you accidentally hook it up to a USB 3.0 computer, though.It is really too bad because these are very attractive enclosures. They are plastic, but have a metallic look and a slightly rubberized feel to them. Next to the USB cable is a tiny blue LED indicator light.ALL of the physical hard drives when removed from the enclosures perform flawlessly in numerous other connection methods including direct SATA attach to the Intel chipset SATA controllers, to add-in PCIe SATA cards, to a similar Seagate Backup Plus USB 3.0 enclosure, to another USB 3.0 SATA dock. In short, it's the Toshiba enclosure that is at fault. It has major problems.Do yourself a favor and just get one of the Seagate Backup Plus drives or WDC enclosures/drives at Costco.

I have to be the only person I know who is so afraid of hard drive (HD) failure that I double and even triple back up my information on different external drives. I've never had even one external or internal HD fail on me but, from the horror stories you can read out there, one can never be too protective when it comes to your data.I'm usually a Western Digital HD fan but when I saw the sweet deal the 'mart had on this drive for Black Friday, I figured I'd give it a try and if I didn't like it, it could always go back to the 'mart for a refund. The formatted space available on this drive out of the box is 931 GB. As I introduced earlier, I'm a collector of external hard drives. I have at least 12 different external hard drives all Western Digital ranging from 320 GB, all the way up to 2 TB in size. Something that bothered me about this and the most recent Western Digital drive I bought is that they use a different type connector. This drive uses a 3.0 Micro B type connector, which is much different than the previous 2.0 Micro B and Mini B connectors you probably have lying around the house. Although a cable is included in the box, I guess this is just something us old HD users will have to get used to. Perhaps when I upgrade to a PC in the future with a 3.0 USB port I'll learn to appreciate the change.I bought this drive with the intention of not using the included software but just using it as another backup storage drive. Drag and drop file transfer speeds are equal to what I get on my Western Digital drives with an average of about 15mb/sec as estimated by windows. It took just about 2-3 hours to transfer 179GB of data from my desktop to the Toshiba and that was using a 2.0 port on my notebook.The device casing is made of entirely of plastic. However, I don't feel this makes it any less useable than similar brand drives. Durability wise I feel it's well put together. I've been using it a few days now and it has fully lived up to my expectations. I can't comment on the included backup software because that is not why I bought this drive and I would never use the backup software included with any drive anyway; I just have a preference for manually transferring my data. Overall, this is a very durable drive and I will update this review should anything change regarding my experience with it.

Not for use on laptops, it will continually disconnect and interfere with any large files you may be transferring and/or viewing. It's especially infuriating when you're watching a movie and it disconnects multiple times (10+), often for no discernible reason, forcing you to reconnect, re-authenticate, and find your place again.
