The MiniPro USB 3.0 portable hard drive enclosure is one of the fastest members in the MiniPro product line, delivering speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0. The solid black enclosure features a unique aluminum body engineered to effectively dissipate heat and allow for maximum protection. The MiniPro enclosure is compatible with 7mm, 9.5mm, 12.5mm and 15mm SATA 2.5" hard drives and is powered using the included USB 3.0 cable, eliminating the need for a power adapter. A separate DC input is available for those who prefer to power from an AC adapter.

This enclosure is roomy enough to hold a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drive securely. Installation is intuitive and simple. Drive is secured to frame with four screws, mounting solidly. Nice feature is the rubber pads that go over the screws that holding the case closed. The rubber disks act as feet, raising the drive off the surface and preventing any sliding. I keep it sitting under my MacBook Pro which is raised off the desk and situated on a Belkin USB-powered laptop cooling tray. With the air circulating up through this opening, this enclosure never even gets warm. Even if I don't plug in the fan on the laptop tray, it doesn't get hot, only slightly warm. It is quiet, I have to look at the light to see if it's running.This case draws all its power and data from a single USB connection to the computer, the USB 3.0 cable is provided with the enclosure. My Macs do not support USB 3.0, but this enclosure is backwards compatible with USB 2.0. It functions very well in a USB 2.0 port.I had some problems with it plugged into both my Mac Pro AND my MacBook Pro. The drive kept ejecting itself in the middle of data transfer and I'd get a message that I should not remove the drive without first ejecting it. I searched online and saw that this was a problem with Macs for several years with external hard drives, regardless of whether they had an independent power source or used the USB for power, so I didn't think it was caused by this enclosure. BTW - this item has a receptacle for a power adapter, but doesn't come with a power adapter.I called Apple under my existing AppleCare plan and described the problem. The Tech told me to reset the power management chip (Turn off computer, unplug power cord, remove battery, hold down power button for five seconds. Install battery, connect power cord and power up.) This solved the spontaneous disk ejecting problem. It has worked flawlessly ever since.

This enclosure is solid metal, so it's quite sturdy. As mentioned previously, the "cooling fins" don't actually touch the drive and are for decoration only. Despite this, ventilation shouldn't be a problem as the front grill is perforated and there are open slots on the rear. There is no separate power cable or power input, but if your USB 3.0 port is to spec it should have no problem powering a 2.5" hard drive on its own.I would have liked to see some kind of sound dampening (perhaps a more tightly sealed case or rubber mounts) and the LED, as it is, is not really aligned with the cutout in the case, which means that while you'll see the LED light, it's not very clear.

.UPDATE 2013-05-14 (15MM CAPABILITY AND +5V DC HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE NEWER VERSIONS OF THIS ENCLOSURE)I see that Oyen has redesigned this enclosure. The one that is currently selling has features that weren't included on the ones that I previously purchased. Oddly, Amazon and Oyen are selling the new version under the same listing as the old version. Thus, my review of the older version is still 'stuck' here, attached to the newer version (see Original Review below).In any case, this newer version is thicker and can accommodate 15mm height drives. The older version of the enclosure topped out at holding 12.5mm height drives. So this new version of the enclosure should be perfect for the highest capacity drives, like the 2TB Western Digital WD20NPVT hard drive.I've been using 2TB WD 15mm height hard drives in other applications, and they are performing well. So I'm eager to try them out in the newer version of this Oyen enclosure. I've got 2 enclosures on order, so we'll see how it goes.Also, Oyen have apparently reversed their previous position and decided to add a +5-volt DC supplementary power receptacle. This is most welcome. Hopefully it won't be needed often, but its nice to know that it is available when the situation calls for it.So, it looks like a great enclosure has gotten even better. I've got 2 of the newer versions on order, so we'll see how it goes.Oyen remain my favorite enclosures - I suspect a great enclosure is about to get even better....ORIGINAL REVIEW (OF THE OLDER 12.5MM / NO DC POWER PLUG VERSION OF THIS ENCLOSURE)I've used dozens of 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch hard drive enclosures in the past 5 years.This Oyen USB 3.0, 2.5-inch drive form factor, 12.5mm drive height enclosure has the best build quality of any of the enclosures I've used and is my favorite. It is a little thicker to make room for the 12.5mm height drives.I tested this model with a 500GB 7200RPM 9.5mm height hybrid drive and a 1.0TB 5400RPM 12.5mm height hard drive. I connected the enclosure to USB 2.0 ports on an HP notebook using WinXP Pro SP3 and an Asus notebook running Win7 Home Premium 64-bit using the supplied 14-inch long USB 3.0 cable and it works fine on both machines with either hard drive.The enclosure has no provision for an external power supply, so I was concerned that there wouldn't be enough power for the drives when connected to the USB 2.0 ports. However, the ports on both notebook computers proved to have enough juice for these large capacity, high speed 2.5 inch drives in the un-powered enclosure (as long as only one enclosure was used with the Buffalo ExpressCard adapter that I was using).I would guess that the Oyen enclosure did it's part by being reasonably power efficient. Integrated USB 3.0 ports (non-ExpressCard) are specced to provide even more power than USB 2.0 ports, so power should be even less of a concern when using an integrated USB 3.0 port.To test these further, I installed a Buffalo Technology IFC-EC2U3/UC ExpressCard USB 3.0 2-port adapter on the HP notebook computer (see my review of the Buffalo adapter). The adapter could only power 1 un-powered enclosure (such as this one), while it could handle 2 enclosures if one or both of them was an externally powered model with a power supply plugged into the wall.I tested the enclosure while the 1TB drive was installed. I connected it to one of the USB 3.0 ports on the Buffalo Technology adapter and it works fine when only one un-powered drive enclosure is connected. However, when 2 un-powered drive enclosures are connected, neither of the drives in the enclosures worked with the Buffalo ExpressCard. Adding supplemental power to the Buffalo ExpressCard failed.As a side note, I connected 2 Sans Digital powered 3.5in USB 3.0 enclosures to the ExpressCard adapter and they did work. So if you plan to use an ExpressCard adapter to power 2 enclosures, you might want to choose an adapter other than Buffalo, or buy powered enclosures instead of these.The USB 3.0 capability of this Oyen enclosure and adapter should give a significant performance boost when transferring lots of data.There's not much needed for instructions with an enclosure, but the one's that are provided by Oyen are top-notch. The packaging, descriptions, diagrams, and specifications are excellent.I just wish Oyen had designed these with a receptacle to allow attaching an external power supply so I could get the needed juice to allow 2 enclosures to be attached my Buffalo ExpressCard. I will try getting another brand of ExpressCard to see if it works better with these....UPDATE 2012:I switched my ExpressCard adapter out from a Buffalo branded one to an Oyen branded one. Everything works great now with the Oyen ExpressCard adapter and these Oyen enclosures.I placed a couple of monster-long reviews here at Amazon that described my troubles with the Buffalo ExpressCard adapter and how the Oyen ExpressCard adapter eventually allowed me to get everything working with 2 industrial 4-port CoolGear hubs, for a total of 8 ports of USB 3.0 goodness on a Pentium 4 laptop! It all works with a bunch of USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 devices, including Oyen enclosures, Sans Digital enclosures, various thumbdrives, and the like.Bottom line: As long as the other gear (to which these are attached) is good gear that operates as it should, then the Oyen enclosures work just as they should.--
