This is my third G-Drive Mobile hard drive. I also have a pair of the 500 GB versions (in black), which I continue to find reliable and convenient. This review is less about this specific drive (1TB silver) than it is generally directed towards the product line (G-Drive Mobile) as a whole.Why I like these drives: * ---- reliability: I've had no problems whatsoever with any of them * ---- design (form): clean and unobtrusive look; practical shape; neutral and attractive colors * ---- design (function): dense materials (nice and heavy); small and stable footprint, stacks easily and elegantly * ---- convenience: the triple interface (FW-400/800 + USB) is indispensable; fast transfers / daisy chaining / connect anywhere * ---- performance: 5400-rpm allows for self-power (no power cord), and dead silent operation; warm (not hot) to the touch at most * ---- extras: comes with three cables (FW800, FW400, USB 2.0)--not cheap-o, but thick, very high-quality cables.How I use them:I have a Mac Pro with ~6 TB inside (including a Time Machine backup), plus two other drives (5.25") connected via eSATA docks--so my local storage and local back-up needs are already covered. I use these (G-Drive Mobile) drives purely for away-from-home situations. For example: * ---- I use one of the 500 GB for DJ'ing; It's a great drive for use with Pioneer CDJ-2000s, since it's reliable and self-powered * ---- I use one of the 500 GB for traveling with most of my files (graphic design resources, Lightroom Libraries, etc.) * ---- I've designated this new one as a local backup (via CrashPlan)--but it will also function as a comprehensive grab-and-go driveFinal thoughts:Of all the hard drives I've ever purchased--the great majority of them have actually been Western Digital. I've been pleased with that brand, and have had good luck with their drives (both external, and internal). While looking to replace a WD Passport--unable to find any WD drives with a triple-interface--I stumbled across the G-Drive Mobile. The design of these G-Drives is just so darn good--and in retrospect, the WD designs look a bit amateurish in comparison. One thing I find so stupid with hard drive manufacturers is all the pointless crud they use to entice you--like blinking capacity gauges, backup software, etc. These G-Drives have none of that--just the raw goods: an empty, sturdy, heavy, reliable, quiet, portable hard drive that can connect three different ways--top-notch cords included.In the end, it's hard to go wrong with these...

This little drive has a lot going for it: attractive design, good fit and finish, petite form factor, very quiet (must press ear to case to hear the drive spin) and easy as falling off a log to hookup (one wire). It's even comes formatted for the Mac OS! It's a bit pricey and you can save 3 or 4 jacksons if you go with the USB only version. However, FW800 is faster and it's easier to daisy chain this little guy to external FW drives rather than unplugging my mess of USB cables. Love that it draws power from the connection so no need to lug a wall wart. It's no speed demon and is a lot slower than my big FW drives but that's to be expected for a tiny 5400RPM unit: took many hours to copy 650GB of files. Averaged about 33MB per second according to Carbon Copy Cloner. After all that, the unit was only warm to the touch, but not hot, so no worries about it overheating when unloading huge audio or RAW image files.One tiny nitpick: this is really a FW800 and USB2 drive. There is no FW400 port. However, it comes with a FW800/400 adapter cable so no biggie. All my Macs have FW800 anyway. USB3 would be nice to future proof it a bit but I'm sure that will be included in a more expensive model.There is one big gotcha: when connected to the FW800 port this drive never spins down. Sleep mode doesn't invoke spin down. FW800 on my Mac Pro (OS 10.8.3) is always powered so even with the computer shut down the G-Drive is still warm and spinning! My LaCie, OWC and WD externals all spin down in sleep mode and when the computer is shut down, so apparently the G-Drive firmware isn't smart enough to spin down when the computer becomes inactive. However, I found a workaround: USB2. When plugged into the USB ports of my Mac Pro the G-Drive will spin down when inactive, sleep mode is invoked or when the computer is shut down. If I would have know about this glitch I would have saved $50 and bought the plain USB model.What it is designed to do--live in my messenger bag and ferry huge audio and graphics files from home to work--it does well. I'm surprised it didn't come with a case but it fits perfectly in my old WD portable drive case.

I have three of these now, and these are my main storage and 'scratch disc' for editing videos as well as for regular backups.My oldest is a year old.. They are fast, quiet and reliable.Yes, sure it is possible to get a defective drive, but these are quality in general, in spite of the bad review I noticed below.
