IDE is also called EIDE, PATA, or ATA.
To determine if your hard drive is an IDE drive or a SATA drive, please look for the connectors. An IDE connector is longer, and has two rows of pins that stick out.
A SATA connector is smaller and has two plastic tabs with flat metal contacts.

Well, five bucks for shipping is a ripoff but at 5 bucks per enclosure they're a real bargain so I ordered 3 a couple of days ago. The cases are quite beautiful and super easy to install. You even get a bonus small screwdriver and a leather-like carrying case, which is cool.Only downside is it uses up 2 USB ports, so if you have limited USB ports that's something to think about. The upside of course if you don't have to plug it in. They're TINY and ideal for laptop use. Not sure if the tiny size would have an impact if you want to have these running 24x7, I wonder if they would overheat. I am a photographer and keep different major shoots in these wallet-size enclosures, which I take out on the field so it's ideal. I usually have them on for 5-6 hours per day and they didn't get particularly hot.

For six dollars you can not lose. It does work but not a secure home for your precious hard drive. The attaching screws are so tiny that they strip immediately. There is no filler support for the hard drive so it floats inside the enclosure and rattles. I had to drill out the holes and install larger screws and add a filler pad to insulate the hard drive.

This USB 2.0 external hard drive enclosure is perfect for using a compact 2.5" laptop hard drive for backups. The aluminum case is well made and will help dissipate heat buildup some although there is no airflow provided. The unit was totally plug and play on my Win XP system, no drivers or installation needed. It comes with a USB cable and drivers for older Win98/SE systems. The unit doesn't look exactly like the one pictured, but the blue case is very attractive and slim with black ends.
