It took me a while to find a horizontal eSATA dock, but it's perfect: I can stick it on top of my tower and not worry about it tipping over, or put it on the keyboard tray.Positive:- Performance over USB 2.0 is as expected, tested with OS X and Windows; have not had a chance to try 3.0- Build quality is great, surpassed expectations- All included cables are of good qualityNegative:- When it arrived, the power button had come unclipped and popped off. Not a huge deal, as I just stuck it back on, but mildly annoying (-1 star)I would recommend this product as it is versatile and well-made.

I can't say what the problem is exactly. I bought a new 2.5" drive, plugged it in, formatted it, loaded files on it, placed the drive in an external case, tested the drive, changed my mind about what I wanted on the drive, put it back in the adapter, reformatted it, added different data on it, put the drive back in the external case, and the drive wouldn't spin up. Tried the drive in a different case. It wouldn't spin up. Took out my rather awkward NewerTech SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Universal Drive Adapter (the reason I wanted the Orico), hooked up the drive, it worked, but I reformatted it again and then put the drive back in the case - and it wouldn't spin up.My fear is that something about the Orico may have done something to the drive, and I can't take a chance on it again.

For a while I've been contemplating the idea to get a docking station to have the ability to view and to prep hard drives without having to open my PC case every single time. I tried to stay away from loose cable adapters and upright docking stations as some of those caused me to lose a drive due to a short circuit and the upright are easy to knock down (You know what I mean if you have toddlers). The last thing you want is that your drive get a hard bump while spinning.So, when I saw Orico HDD docking station I liked the idea of a horizontal docking station, as I explored the specs more I also liked the options between eSATA or USB 3.0. In general the docking station it's 95% well built with the exception of the power button (as another reviewer noted). It feels a little bit flimsy when you push and it gives the sensation the button will pop-out. So, if you are getting this, try to be gentle when your first power on until to get the feel for it and to apply the right amount of pressure. Performance-wise, the docking station was able to deliver file transfers 90MB/sec. on some big file transfers I performed from a Windows network share to the drive.Both eSATA and USB 3.0 worked without problems on my Gigabyte motherboard and under Windows 7 SP1. I used File Scavenger and EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition and they both worked fine with my station and a 2TB Seagate drive. I was able to recover and repartition a drive. One observation, the airflow beneath the drive it's limited and close to none, make sure if you are performing an extensive operation with any given drive that you have proper ventilation or cooling in the room to avoid drive overheating. The unit ships with all you need: Power supply, eSATA cable, USB 3.0 cable and some basic documentation. The documentation it's basically useless as the station works out of the box without any issue.I haven't tried to do any hot swapping as I get the feeling the docking station it's not design to do so and I don't feel the urge to put my drives and data at risk. Especially when it takes just a few seconds to "soft-eject", to power down and to switch drives. I would recommend this unit if you are shopping for a HDD docking station. As I mentioned, my only two observations were the power button and the heat level IF you do extensive operations with any given drive. Other than that, I wish Orico offers an IDE / Molex version, I got a bunch of old drives that could get some use.I really like the horizontal factor. One final perk, the power supply it's also branded as Orico, I mention it because it makes easy to identify it, especially if you deal with several power supplies from various sources. I usually try to use a label maker to identify the power supplies, just for the sake of my mental sanity.
