The GoodI got this enclosure at a local computer store. I was a little nervous about getting it because I was planning to use it on Ubuntu Linux. The package and on line descriptions made no mention of Linux. That's not a big surprise. It must be really hard for companies to write that on packaging I suppose. I usually have very good luck getting hardware to work with Linux. Anyway the drive worked just fine on Linux, as I expected, when connected to a USB3 port. Three of the six system I own or manage have USB 3 ports now so it was going to be nice having a little speed boost on those systems.The Bad.The problem was the enclosure package says it is backwards compatible with USB 2 so that it will run at USB 2 speed when connected to a USB 2 port. I found that was not the case for me. The linux dmesg output showed many strange errors when connected to USB 2 ports. My guess is the single USB cable connector included can not get enough power from a USB 2 port to power this laptop HDD. The enclosure does not have an external power port either. It might work with a SSD as they seem to need less power.I purchased another enclosure here on Amazon and I still need to review it...Sabrent USB 3.0 To 2.5-Inch Sata Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure Case for 9.5mm, 12.5mm 2.5-Inch SATA-I, SATA-II, SATA-III HDD and SSD Black (EC-TB4P)It comes with a Y style cable and does work, in USB 3 mode, with the large USB end connected to a USB 3 port. Or in USB 2 mode when both males ends are connected to 2 USB 2 ports. This is with the same physical HDD tested in both enclosures. This will allow me to use the drive in all of the six Linux systems I own or manage.

I received it a few days ago but i just used it today for the first time with a WD Blue 600GB HDD. I copied about 11GB of data from a Lenovo T410 (USB 2.0) onto this NexStar at a transfer rate of about 2MB/s (really slow i know). I then docked the same laptop into a Thinkpad Mini Series 3 dock with USB 3.0 and transferred the data back onto the same laptop but this time I used the USB 3.0 port and I was averaging about 25MB/s.not too bad for my first time doing a cope/paste on Windows 7.
