The SAT2510U2F External Hard Drive Enclosure supports both USB 2.0 and FireWire 400 (IEEE1394a) host connections, providing the compatibility needed to create a convenient and versatile external SATA storage solution for desktop computers as well as MacBooks® and Windows® based laptops. Large capacity drives (tested with up to 1TB) can be used to greatly enhance your computer''s storage/backup capabilities. The USB/FireWire enclosure features a slim, lightweight aluminum design and includes a 6-pin FireWire cable simplifying the option to connect through IEEE 1394a, as well as a USB to Power adapter and USB 2.0 Y-cable which can be used to ensure sufficient power delivery for higher capacity/higher power consumption hard drives (HDD) or solid state drives (SSD).

The firewire connectivity is what sold me on this item. Works great with the HDD for my laptop. My only con is that it does not dissipate well and can get quite hot during extended use, which can't be good for the drive.

Circuitry/ROM is very quickly recognized by host OS; drive runs quiet and cool. Couldn't have done any better than this.

I am a formally trained computer professional with 20 years experience. Yes, you can get a 2.5" drive into this shell, but you have to really jam it. The screws interfere with smooth entry of the drive into the shell, and reorientating the drive 180 deg. makes it impossible to insert. The shell does not directly contact the drive, so there is virtually zero heat dissipation, which will greatly reduce the time to drive failure.StarTech must have only branded but not actually manufactured, i.e. was manufactured by a nameless electronics sweat-house in Taiwan; this particular 2.5" FireWire SATA USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure, because I buy a ton of intelligently designed equipment from StarTech, and it all works right except this thing. The enclosure wastes about 1.5 cm of length (could be that much shorter) because of poor design. But even with the added length, the design is s o o o poor that the drive still doesn't fit, prefering to butt into the bottom endcap and create a big gap between the aluminum housing and the plastic endcap.It also adds needlessly and destructively to the thickness of the unit, to which poor cooling can be attributed. The unit is capable of FireWire connection, but it is packaged with a style of FireWire cable that almost none, or zero laptops use. USB interface supplies 500 milliamp at 5.0 volts, so USB can power the unit and the drive inside, if you could ever get a drive inside the unit without using unconscionable force.If you use FireWire, except in rare instances, you'll need to separately purchase the correct cable, and then you also have to use USB for power only, because the FireWire specification provides insufficient power to run a hard drive. So, if you need USB anyway, what is the point of the FireWire capability? C'mon, get with the program. After years of pleasant experience using StarTech products, my vigilance waned, and I relied on the StarTech brandname alone.
