Works as well as an internal drive

I purchased this to assist with installing software on an ultrabook. It's extremely simple it use. You only need to plug in one of the two USB connectors if you are using USB 2.0 or above, which should be standard on most computers made after 2004. The drive uses a mini-USB to USB cable, so if you don't like the dual connectors, you can replace it with a similar cable. The drive fits nicely under my Asus monitor. The drive was recognized immediately by Windows 7 and Windows 8 RC, as well as by the system BIOS for booting from a disc. The drive does come with DVD playback software, but I recommend using VLC Media Player if you want to use this to watch DVDs. Many of the negative reviews seem to come from people who do not understand how to use this for DVD playback.I bought this drive because it was the cheapest, and any similar ASUS drive would do the same things. I wish it had a vertical stand to take up less space on my desk, but this is a minor concern. It does everything I want it to do.

Works with Macs

I needed an inexpensive DVD-RW burner for a few one-off burns, and my MacBook Air is bereft of an optical drive. (And the SuperDrive in my MacBook Pro died years ago. Next up is gutting that warhorse and swapping in an SSD for the aging spinning-platter hard drive, and a replacement SuperDrive ... but I digress.)The good: It works, out of the box, with the Mac, no issues. The Finder recognized it immediately and burned discs just like my SuperDrive used to. It's lightweight and ridiculously cheap.The bad: It's cheap, plasticky, ugly, and has no source of external power; it relies on a USB "Y" cable, which doesn't work so good if you have a machine (like all of mine) with the two USB ports on opposite sides of the computer!I knew that buying it, so used it as an excuse to pick up a USB hub for the MacBook Air (something I've been meaning to do anyway); found a $20 D-Link DUB-H4, 4 port USB 2.0, with an added bonus -- one of the ports is a high amperage (2.0A) charging port for an iPad / tablet / rapid charging an iPhone. One less thing to carry with me, and the D-Link hub itself is tiny (about 2/3 the size of a MiFi; maybe 2" square?).If you're looking for inexpensive basic functionality and you don't care much about aesthetics, this is a great deal. No idea why Amazon's information doesn't list Mac compatibility; the Asus box itself has a prominent Mac logo and states it's compatible with OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and newer.

Works with Windows 8

I recently received a ASUS Windows 8 touch screen laptop that does not include a DVD drive. I did a lot of research to find a portable DVD drive that would work with Windows 8 - the ASUS External Slim Optical Drive works great with Windows 8.I was able to easily plug in the two USB connections (one for data, and one for power) from the DVD drive and insert the disc to load it onto my computer, but once I loaded a DVD movie into the drive nothing would happen. I found out that Windows 8 does not come with a program to play DVD's so I had to install one from the internet first. I chose Power DVD, and now I am able to play DVD's on my laptop.The DVD drive is a nice small size, and the diamond cut design looks very stylish. I love it!

Elegant, compact, and works great, software not so great

This Seagate drive is now my new backup device. I have a 1GB Time Capsule, which works great, but it has problems. Backups take a long time, even for small amounts, and my Mac Mini slows down during the backup. Yes, I know it's not supposed to, but it does.This drive, however, has none of those problems. I had no idea that a USB- or Fireware-attached drive was so much faster than a network-attached drive. Incremental backups take less than a minute, and larger (e.g. 2GB) backups take less than 5. With my Time Capsule, some backups would take as much as 20 minutes -- a huge difference!Since this drive supports both USB and FireWire 800, I also wanted to test the relative performance. I didn't notice any difference in Time Machine backups, so I ran a simple file-copy test. Using FireWire 800, a 3.5GB file took one minute and forty seconds to copy. Using USB, that same file took two minutes and twelve seconds. So the FireWire 800 interface is about 25% faster than the USB 2.0 interface.The software that comes with the drive, however, is not so wonderful. For starters, it is not required to install the software to use the drive. In fact, the first thing I did was copy the software off the drive and reformatted the drive. I did this because I wanted to have two partitions (one for backups, and the other for general storage), and I also wanted to use a non-journalled HFS file system.Before you can install the software, you have to register the drive. I supplied a fake name and email address, but I'm disappointed that it's required. The only reason I went through the process is for this review, normally I would have just deleted the software outright. The software license has nothing objectionable in it.The software installs three components: a Mac NTFS driver, a Seagate "Dashboard", and a Seagate "Storage Driver". All three require about 75MB of space combined. I don't trust the drivers, so I skipped them. Sorry, but a Google search shows posts from people having problems with these drivers, and I didn't want to compromise my system. The drivers apparently are only necessary if you want to be able to access Windows-formatted drives from your Mac.Unfortunately, the Dashboard did not recognize my drive, probably because I reformatted it. So that was a waste of my time. My suggestion is that unless you really need to use this drive on PCs and Macs, just skip the software altogether. And even then, I would just look for an alternate first.

"The disk was not ejected properly"

I'm a MAC user. This headline sums up my 3 days with this hard drive. Anytime I was trying to copy data onto it, it gave me this message. I REALLY wanted this thing to work out because it was a ton of storage for under $200. But it would eject itself randomly during use, the hard drive icon would stay on the desktop, and it would freeze up my OS so that I couldn't do anything except hold down the power button to perform a hard shut down and cringe at the possible damage I was doing to my computer. I read the negative reviews here on Amazon, but thought that since they were outnumbered by the positives that I would be safe....Bummer. I really needed the storage ASAP for a project I'm in the middle of.

Quiet, fast, with a few caveats

This product is a 3TB external hard drive which is plugged into a plastic base that doubles as a stand for the drive. The plastic base contains a port for the AC line as well as two Thunderbolt ports. Seagate has a variety of these bases available, each with different ports: one model has USB 3.0 connectivity, another model has both USB 2.0 and FW800 connectivity, and the third, this one, has Thunderbolt connectivity. However, Seagate is making available only the Thunderbolt base independent of a hard drive (so far, anyway). So it's easy to buy the hard drive with the USB 3.0 base and a separate Thunderbolt adapter, but if you buy the Thunderbolt adapter/drive combination (and that's what's for sale on this page), you won't currently be able to buy the USB 3.0 or USB 2.0/FW800 base separately.So make absolutely sure that you will be using this drive with a Thunderbolt capable Mac. Frankly, to have a wide range of current Macs with which you can use this drive, I'd grab the FW800 compatible unit and then add a Thunderbolt base to my overall assembly.I configured the drive as a clone of my laptop's internal drive. This was accomplished using SuperDuper on a MacBook Pro (13", early 2011) running 10.8.2. The entire process worked quickly and easily. The drive works correctly as a startup drive through the Thunderbolt connection. The startup speed is roughly equal to the startup speed of my internal hard drive. Running applications from the 3TB drive takes place with no obvious delay caused by the drive. There's an improvement in overall speed when compared to FW800, but for some reason I got nothing like the 10-fold increase in throughput that one should get in comparison, perhaps because of SuperDuper's software design. The creation of my drive clone, with only about 200GB of files on the internal drive, took about 1.2 hours.The drive runs very quietly - the internal drive of the laptop is louder than the external drive. Neither is particularly loud. The drive generates a low amount of heat when being run continuously (as during the backup process) but usually is cool to the touch. The overall unit is small enough to travel easily. The AC cord includes five adapters to allow connection to multiple worldwide power sources. The box also includes the Thunderbolt cable. There are no directions or instructions beyond a very simplistic pamphlet. Backup software is included, but I did not take advantage of this.Addendum: I wanted to back up the hard drive of an iMac that does not have a Thunderbolt port. So I hooked this drive to my MacBook Pro, then connected the MacBook Pro to the iMac via a Firewire 800 cable, then booted the iMac as a Firewire drive by turning it on while holding the "T" key down. The MacBook Pro then saw two external drives: The thunderbolt drive and the IMac. I was able to make a backup of the iMac's hard drive without difficulty.

Trashed two drives.

Faulty internal power connector, managed to fry an optical drive and a rather important laptop HD. Check the connectors on every piece of equipment in this package if you use it. I plugged my hard drive in and immediately the smell of burning plastic and wisps of smoke begin emerging from my once operational hard drive. I'm now looking into professional data recovery which will cost me hundreds of times more then this product cost me. Spend a little extra and get a real piece of equipment...trust me its not worth the headaches.

Okay, but has a MAJOR omission

I use devices like this in my work. I was attracted by the low price of this unit, about one-third of other similar products. Cheap enough to give it a try. The unit is cheaply packaged in a poly bag, but everything you need for connecting to an IDE or SATA drive is included. There's an AC adapter that terminates in a standard 12vdc plug for IDE drives and a pigtail SATA power adapter. The main unit, the piece that contains the interface electronics, looks the same as more expensive units and has connectors on either side for 3.5" and 2.5" IDE drives. There is a data cable for SATA drives. One end plugs into the drive, the other into a molded outlet on the electronics portion. The USB cable connecting the interface to the computer is a little short compared to competitor's units that I have, but that isn't really big deal. There's a mini-CD with a bunch of drivers and some documentation. Anyone using Windows 2000 or later will not need the drivers. I've tried it a Knoppix Linux distribution and it worked fine. Can't speak for use on a Mac, but the manufacturer says it is compatible. So why only three stars? There's no drive activity LED! When you're working with a product like this, you absolutely want a visual indication that data is being read or written. Many applications don't provide a progress indicator and even those that do aren't necessarily accurate. In other words, you can wind up in a situation where you have to know if everything is working - and with this product, there is no evidence of drive activity! Now that is bad. But here's the curious part: the little bit of documentation that is included on the CD says that there should be an activity LED. I intend on writing the distributor I purchased this from for clarification. If I just goa bum unit without a working LED, I'll amend my review to reflect that this unit at its current price is a real bargain. Otherwise, it is barely adequate, regardless of the price.UPDATE: 11/01/09 The vendor of this product has been super-great to work with. They sent a replacement unit quickly and without question. Unfortunately, the replacement didn't have an data activity LED either. I tried working with these a couple of times and without that lED, they simply aren't suitable for serious use. Yes, they do work as they should for transferring data - but if you can't physically observe drive activity, you don't know what's going on. Too bad, because these are priced much lower than other units that do have the LED.Jerry

USB 2 IDE SATA Hard Drive Connection

Tried this device a Friend of mine had when I had a hard drive get corrupted in the boot sector. It worked so well that I ordered mine own. Did a hard drive replacement on my MAC Book Pro using this unit and it was easy and no problems. If you work with your hardware or swap hard drives then this is a MUST HAVE. Works on 2.5, 3.5 & 5.25 inch hard drives as well as CD and DVD 5.25 inch drives. SATA and IDE and PATA drives all work.

An essential storage backup tool in a digital world

I'm a computer repair technician, and one issue I have all the time with my customers is, the famous, 'a virus hijacked my computer and those precious pictures are inside'. Yeah, the prom, the honeymoon, or the newborn pictures are usually held without ransom. Most of the time we are dealing with malware of some sort that affects the Windows operating system files, but leaves the data intact. So, before I repair the computer, I rescue the pictures, and any other file they might value. However, not all repair technicians do this, most allege that the files are corrupted, which might be the case, but usually it really means they are too busy to rescue anything, don't know how to do it, or will not do it unless paid big cash.For one own's sakes, the best thing to do is backing up the data before the computer gets infected, or the hard drive fails. For pictures I recommend backing up the original files into data discs, but for faster everyday files backups (music, movies, games, software etc.) is better to use an external hard drive.The Western Digital My Passport 2 TB is an awesome way to carry large amounts of data in a tiny container, that is always available and secure. I love its dimensions, both physically and in bytes.Also, the truly fast data transfers done with the USB 3.0 interface save time every day. Speaking of the USB connector, another great feature is that only requires a single USB port for power, while many external hard drives and enclosures, with form factor 2.5", require two USB ports.This drive is great not only to keep multimedia files, but also for storing documents in digital form, because it saves space. Besides, in case of an emergency it's faster to grab it then a folder. I've been doing backups using both hard drives and discs, and it has been of great help throughout the years. For example, the last time I moved, the new school district wanted my daughter first vaccines' records. I knew I have the original card somewhere in a box, but I needed it fast. Then I remembered I scanned the card years ago, and that print-scanned image, which was storage in my daughter's digital folder, inside my external hard drive, saved me hours of search and quickened her registering process at the new school.About the WD SmartWare software offered by the manufacturer, I hesitated before going for it, because in the past WD back up software didn't work well for me. However, when one is dealing with such a big amount of data, doing it manually is a pain, and the alternative of using the backup and restore features included in Microsoft Windows 7, is something I would only do for a complete system image, not for the everyday backup. So, I installed the WD SmartWare software and so far, it's performing well, it does require time and attention to learn its functionality though. If you decide not to use the WD SmartWare, you can still use the hard drive right out of the box, like any other external hard drive.Besides reading the user's manual, I strongly suggest that before plugging in the drive into your computer, you go to the Western Digital My Passport's support page, and read how to use it.Because there are a few details to know before starting backing up your data. Among these topics, How to install WD SmartWare from the external drives, How to create a category backup using WD SmartWare, How to backup specific files and folders using WD SmartWare, How to retrieve a backup using WD SmartWare, Setting up security to lock or unlock a WD external drive with WD SmartWare, (videos are provided in some of these), and How to partition and format a WD drive on Windows (7, Vista, XP) and Mac OSX etc., etc.I can't post links here, but one can do a search for WD Support / Downloads / My Passport and will find the page where a variety of software that works with the Western Digital My Passport 2 TB, can be downloaded for free.However, the most important fact of reading Western Digital's support information for this drive, is to learn how to use it 'before' entrusting your valuable data to it. Specially, if you choose to install the WD SmartWare software.There are very important steps everybody should know while setting up these drives, so it's clearly stated on the Western Digital's support pages.For example, while installing the software, it will ask if you want to apply any security (password & encryption) to the drive. Before setting up the password you must check an, I understand box, certifying that you understood that if you forget the password, the data is unrecoverable. I repeat, and excuse the capitals, but this is crucial, IF YOU FORGET THE PASSWORD, THE DATA IS UNRECOVERABLE.Since there is no way to retrieve your password if you forget it, please write that password in a secure available location. If you want, it's possible to change your security settings, remove security or/and change the password, but in order to do either, you still need the original password entered the first time.If you forget your password, you will not be able to access the data storage in the hard drive, but you can continue to use the drive again if you format it. Of course, the process of reformatting the hard drive will erase all the data inside the unit, and remove the password.I highly recommend the Western Digital My Passport 2 TB external hard drive.I do have an warning though, the only proven and trusted way to preserve important files is to burn them into data discs (CD/DVD/Blu-rays). Because hard drives have a limited lifespan, and will fail sooner or later, usually without any warning signs. An external hard drive is very convenient to use, but the stuff that cannot be easily replaced, should always first be backed up on discs. Trust me, it will give you peace of mind. Also you can have two different hard drives with the same information, like I do. If you really don't want to keep discs around anymore.

The PERFECT External Storage Drive For My Macbook Pro

Wow. So many mixed reviews here, and like those of you who are pondering over whether it is worth purchasing this Western Digital MY PASSPORT, there may not be a clear answer.Let me tell you my story.Recently bought the new Retina Macbook Pro with its 500GB SSD drive. For a person like me who puts a lot of software on my laptop and does quite a bit of movie editing, hard drive space is a premium. So, when figuring out how to handle nearly 200GB of music, I decided it would probably be best to run iTunes off an external drive instead of taking up space on the Macbook.Again...Wow. Reading these reviews on Amazon was quite unnerving. So many great experiences with this drive followed up by a handful of negative experiences -- many talking of total hard drive failure. It's almost as if you are rolling the dice as to whether you'll receive a drive that works or doesn't....then there's the reviews from people who claim they are having problems using this drive on their Mac.Well, I picked myself out a RED 1TB drive. Thought it was a cool color and didn't mind paying the premium price for it. In addition, I picked up this fantastic Case Logic QHDC-101 Hard Case on Amazon for $10. It's the perfect compliment to the red hard drive that fits snuggly inside.Using the Western Digital MY PASSPORT on a Mac couldn't be easier than opening the package, plugging the USB cord into the Macbook, and then formatting it using Disk Utilities. From package to format took under 4 minutes.And for anyone claiming to have a problem using this drive with their Mac, this is all you need to do...1. Plug in the drive via USB connection2. Go to APPLICATIONS -> UTILITIES -> DISK UTILITY3. Click on the hard drive icon located at the very top left sidebar4. Select the ERASE tab and FORMAT in Max OSX Extended (Journaled). Assign your drive a name if you wish.That's it. Easy.The drive works incredibly fast thanks to its USB 3.0 compatibility, which is backwards-compatible with USB 2.0. The drive is extremely quiet, and I didn't notice it getting warm.And, yes, you can run your iTunes off the external drive.

Smart form-factor. So-So software

This is my first experience with a Western Digital hard drive. I purchased the 1 TB Passport drive as opposed to others mainly because CNET awarded its Editors' Choice for the 2 TB model ( which was not available for sale when I placed my order). I am currently using the WD SmartWare (version 1.5.4.5) that comes with loaded the device.Pros:Smart form-factor. Very small and sleek for a 1TB drive.USB powered ( just plug it into your USB port). No need for a power cable or bulky ac adapter. Makes for true portability.Impressive USB 2.0 speed during my initial back up of 131 GBs worth of files/content.Automatic file backup featureOne USB cable( supplied)supports both 3.0 and 2.0.Surprisingly quiet and runs fairly cool too.Excellent customer support. I called twice and spoke to well trained/professional technicians.Cons:WD Smartware software. Surprisingly so-so for this cool little device. Not as intuitive or slick as I had expected or read about. (Am wondering if I would be better off deleting the Smartware software altogether.)This version of Smartware is not very flexible and doesn't include a full system backup( system image)feature. I had to install another application to create a system image ( Luckily WD provides a free copy of an application called Acronis for its customers--however I had to call customer service to learn about this application and be told where to find it on their support page.Automatic backup feature only works while your system is idle.Based on my overall user experience with this device to date ( only a few days) I am somewhere between a 3.5 and 4.0 rating. If however portability with incredible amounts of storage capacity ( the next model goes up to 2Tbs !)in a pocket size device is your main priority--then I don't think there is anything else currently on the market that beats this device in that regard.

Disappointing Digital My Passport carrying case

The material of the carrying case is a huge disappointment. I purchased an earlier version of the Passport external drive and the associated carrying case was made of a sturdy material, appropriately described as a carrying case. This carrying "case" should be described as a pocket. It is made of soft material and appears to offer only scratch protection to the external drive.

Too small for WD My Passport Essential SE 1 TB!

This case is too small to fit WD My Passport Essential SE 1 TB hard drive along with its cord. Only the hard drive fits well, but the cord doesn't in any way. Its also very thin with poor material.I would not recommend this case!!

The material is almost cloth and will offer no protection whatsoever. I made a mistake purchasing this. It doesnt hold the cable too well either and fear that it will tear due to the cable. Give this a skip.
