This USB 2.0 to IDE 2.5 in. External Hard Drive Enclosure lets you transform virtually any 2.5in IDE notebook hard drive into the perfect portable storage solution. My Dell Inspiron 8200 died after 8 solid years of service. Luckily the hard drive still worked but the video card/mother board must have gone bad as I could not load or view Windows either on the laptop's LCD screen or an external monitor. After 8 years of using this laptop for work and personal I had accumulated a significant amount of files that needed to be salvaged. Fortunately I came upon this Infosafe external hard drive enclosure. From someone who had never take a computer apart before I was very intimidated but it worked just as a lot of reviews said it would. After I popped the hard drive out of my laptop (2 screws undone and it slid right out) and removed the hard drive chassis and pin connector from the hard drive I was able to (carefully)insert the hard drive into the Infosafe enclosure and carefully inserted the pins into the pin connector. I plugged the supplied USB cable into both the laptop and then the hard drive and my new Dell running windows 2007 immediately recognized the external hard drive as a USB drive (the instructions state you need to plug the Y cable into two USB inputs on the host PC and the other end into the external hard drive but i was able to get by with one plugged into the laptop). I had been warned by the IT people at work that often for these external hard drives to work one has to format the drive, rendering the info on the old hard drive useless. This was not the case for me. I was able to salvage all my old files, including my itunes collection. I recommend this product to any novice looking to salvage an old laptop hard drive. For $15 its worth a try. If you can turn a screwdriver and carefully plug the hard drive into the pin connector then you can salvage your old hard drive too. Note, not all files were immediately available from my old hard drive. Some folders denied access. After about an hour of trying to copy the file folder to my new laptop, the external hard drive eventually allowed access.

I took a 20 GB hard disk (Hitachi) from a broken Dell Latitude L400 and place it in this enclosure. It is working fine as an external hard disk.The hard disk must be removed from the Dell mounting bracket and connector before intalling it in the Infosafe.

My laptop HD started to have problems, and wouldn't boot anymore. Before I lost everything I bought this product hooked it up to my PC to get my needed files. For that, it worked just fine. Did what I needed it to do. If you are looking for a permanent enclosure to use for an external hard drive, you might want to look for something that's built a little better.
