Works great for GoFlex

This fits the FreeAgent GoFlex drive perfectly. I like the elastic bands that help stop the drive dropping out when you open the case and make it easy to leave the drive in the case while in use.The case is long enough to hold the GoFlex drive with the USB adapter still attached to it. To close the case you only need to unplug the USB cable from the adapter and stash it in the mesh pocket.If you have the optional eSATA adapter, which does not have a removable cable, you must unplug the whole adapter/cable from the drive and stash it in the mesh pocket in order to close the case.It's a tight fit, but you can fit both the USB adapter/cable and the eSATA adapter/cable in the mesh pocket and still close the case.

just what I ordered

This product was just what I ordered. My go flex fits perfectly in the case. The flap that separates the cord from the unit adds extra protection and is not found in many other cases.

Product Description

The UNIDOCK3U USB 3.0 to SATA/IDE Hard Drive Docking Station delivers instant access to 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch IDE and SATA hard drives through two top loading drive slots - one for Serial ATA drives and one for IDE drives - instead of having to mount the drives into a computer or external enclosure/tray. The slot-loading design holds the SATA and IDE drive(s) upright inside the docks, neatly keeping them off the desk, for convenience and a clutter-free setup. A Valuable Utility Tool

Purchased the StarTech USB 3.0 Docking Station from Amazon inorder to test hard drives and transfer info from one to another. Seems it expanded the things I can do with it. Here is a list of what its being used for now.1. Plug in a spare hard drive and do a PC backup using the StarTech as an external hard drive2. With the StarTech you can transfer data from an IDE to a SATA drive3. As an external drive, you can run diagnostics on a 3.5 or 2.5 Sata/IDE drive from your PC4. It Utilizes the speed of USB 3.0 for all back and forth data communicationsDon't know why I waited so long to purchase it! It has worked out perfectly for these tasks. Received the item quickly as always from Amazon. Highly recommend this product both as a tech accessory and external HD.

one IDE and one SATA at a time

While I haven't had any issues with the product I was a little surprised that you can only connect one IDE and one SATA drive at a time. I thought you could copy from SATA to SATA directly, but you cant. The one slot is not an IDE or SATA, it is IDE only.

Awesome for the price

I'm a serious enthusiast and Unix/Linux systems guy. However, I also understand the need for easy, out of the box solutions.This device? It rocks for me and for my proverbial mother. Actually, my mother doesn't yet own one, but she should! It is easy to use and configure, although the manual is quite lacking. You'll want to use a wired connection if you want performance, but enthusiasts might still find the performance lacking compared to a PC or high-end NAS solution. However, for the price, this thing delivers for novices and entusiasts alike.------------------------Blow-by-blow review below:------------------------Before I get to all the great things about it, lets set expectations:* This device is priced only a few dollars more than a bare drive.* Performance is about 22 MB/s (160mbps) for Windows and Apple file sharing. This is faster than your WiFi, however. Use a wired connection.* Performance jumps to 45 MB/s for insecure FTP!* Included instructions are lacking. The device is EASY to setup, but you need to find the instructions online.The good things (non-technical goodness):* Easy to setup (although the manual is lacking)* Easy to use.* DLNA, iTunes server, etc... all disabled by default, and easy enough to enable if you want them.* Facebook media backup feature* Print-server included (although not advertised!)So the great, geeky things?* Based on Seagate's more expensive BlackArmour NAS product.* Runs Linux with SSH enabled by default* Uses LVM storage by default (snapshots!!!)* Ethernet supports jumbo frames (ssh then 'ifconfig eth0 mtu 9000')* The Linux OS includes a bunch of things in the kernel that might be useful: - EXT4 (also ext2, ext3) - XFS - FUSE (NTFS driver included) - WebDAV mount utilities - Potential iSCSI support (supported in kernel - utilities missing) - Potential NFS support - utilities missing, some scripts remain. Great drive and a personal cloud you can access from anywhere

The document that came along says that installing the drive is 3 step process. But it wasn't, the network name that was automatically assigned to drive went offline in few minutes, and I had to access it by going to my router's setup page and getting its ip address.The drive was giving write speeds of 1.45 MB/sec, so I went to see if there is anything in setup. On going to setup page of drive, there was a firmware update sitting. And on updating firmware the drive is now giving write speeds of even slower 1.19 MB/sec, which is very slow from what I expected.On the plus side the iphone app and the remote access of the drive is very very cool.The sharing would have been cool, but it could not work for me since getting contacts from gmail was not possible. They are not using correct gmail authentication apis, and trying to get username/password and access through its own servers.UPDATE about speed:I am very happy with the drive, I gave it 1 start initially because of the slow write speeds, but I am changing it to 5 start as I was wrong. In my case the bottleneck was network, I had 802.11b/g wireless router which gives very bad write speeds. On connecting my laptop through network cable with router, i was getting write speeds of 10MBps, I am sure it could be more if I had better router.

Great product!

This Seagate Central works perfectly. Installation instructions were a bit confusing. It needs better step by step. It also works with Windows 8. It works everytime and don't freak out when you try to access. It takes a few seconds to open due to the fact that hard drive goes to sleep mode. Also one more thing, although it works wireless N 10/100 gigabit Ethernet with slow backups and coping. It streams perfectly. You may need to buy a router with 10/100/1000 gigabit Ethernet capabilities to get faster back up times and quicker file transfers. I'm saying again. This Seagate Central works great.

Excellent Hard Drive

Thoroughly impressed with how small and FAST this drive is. Getting write speeds of over 140mb/s on USB3.0, so it's quick. The drive is super small and looks very well built. Great looking drive.A first for me is the fact that I like the included software- a lot. The Seagate dashboard is worth installing and looking at even if you're predisposed to not like "included software" with most hardware items- like I am. I gave it a shot based on high praises from trusted tech friends and wow. Seagate got the included software right with this drive.Excellent overall package and highly recommended.(The backup and share features are a photographer's dream.)

Love It "So Far".

I have owned a nearly identical WD (Western Digital) drive like this for about 5 years now. Works flawlessly except for one little problem. I seem to have lost/misplaced it! Being black in color it has somehow turned into a Chameleon that I have now spent 2+ months searching for without success....Which brings me to this little jewel. I thought my WD drive was tiny. This drive makes it look like a pig. This is only about 1/4" thin and about the size of a playing card. I was honestly stunned when I took it out of it's box. Installed the software on my Windows 7 machine and now my new Windows 8 machine in just a couple minutes. I ordinarily HATE included software with hard drives but wanted to try it before deleting it to honestly be able to review it. Turns out I LOVE this software and it will be kept. This software is called Dashboard. It even includes several built in videos that show you how to use every feature of this dive. It gives me all the assorted choices on doing backups, is clear & EASY to understand and use. FINALLY.... I have spent years being frustrated by overly complicated back up software that in the end, never much helped me when I got into trouble and needed bailing out. The portion of the software I found most unusual and enjoyable to use is for Saving items shared on Social Networking. It asked for my permission to access my Facebook, Twitter & YouTube accounts, I gave it and entered my passwords. I was actually shocked to see some of the pictures & videos I had placed on my Facebook page years ago & had forgotten about. I "adjusted" that to hopefully erase some of my "tantrums" I unleash when upset at things I encountered in the past like issues regarding Our War's etc. As a USMC combat Veteran I often take issue with some things and fly off the handle just a bit when faced with some opinions I disagree with (I am better now thank goodness). Anyway, it is a great tool for me anyway. Now the YouTube software I do NOT care for since while it does let me upload directly etc, it lacks all the options I choose when doing it directly. I want to pick & choose a title for my videos as well as set my preferences when I upload as to who can comment, vote etc. I also want to choose what category it plays in etc. So, while it offers this feature to at least upload, it is a bare bones tool that still forces me to go back into my account manually anyway so that I can set these items to MY preferences. As a result, I won't be using this feature but nice that it is there I suppose? I would give this 5 stars except for this. My past experience with Seagate drives I own for my Macs (the STCB3000900 and STCB2000100). I have their 2 TB AND 3TB drives. On both I have had endless crashes, freezes, unmounting, etc. I simply have them now sitting out in my garage until I find out how to take them apart and securely DESTROY any of my data that they may still contain. I have used more profanity against these drives than I ever did against the enemy when fighting in Wars......Now this drive is flawless so far. If it lives on and performs anything like my missing WD pocket drive, I will update as warranted. If this goes the way of my past Seagate drives? Well, then I will fully test the Amazon censors with my downgrade:-) So far, I simply love this beautiful little drive. I am even planning on painting it a bright pearl white or candy apple red to make it harder to misplace.

Hardware: EXCELLENT. Software: EXCELLENT Combo: AMAZING

An excellent, lightning-fast, plug and play drive with lightning fast (USB 3.0, firewire)... even with USB 2.0 this drive seems much faster than any other external drive I've used. The drive is the smallest drive I've ever seen - much smaller than the Western Digital My Passport drive I bought a couple of months ago. No external power supply required - it gets is power from the USB port.I've bought and returned countless backup solutions, and am currently running a Western Digital My Book Live 2 with their hideously buggy "Smartware" solution. Most manufacturers can get the hardware right -- but the software is where they stumble. Not Seagate... Software makes the difference - it is extremely intuitive and easy to use. The drive comes preloaded with videos that give you brief walk-throughs of how to set up and configure the backup software. I watched for a few moments (the only negative part of this review is that the woman they use in the videos is just a tad too perky, grated at my ears) and decided just to install the software and see how far I could get without reading the instructions.Minutes later the software installed, walked me through registration, rebooted my computer, and literally 5 minutes later I had backed up all the photos and videos on my Facebook page and had moved on to a backup of my computer. The backup is still running, but I like the progress indicator ( would be great to also see a % of the drive still free). Two nice things about this software that are different than my other similar programs: #1, the data on your backup drive (the Seagate) is NOT encrypted... so you can easily browse using Windows Explorer to the folders on the backup drive and copy individual files if you want to. Same with all your Facebook photos and videos... no need to perform a restore to copy those pictures/videos to your my pictures folder or your desktop. The other nice thing is that it performs a continuous backup, copying files as you make changes, so you can set it and forget it. The software is smooth and fast, really clean interface...I have written some SCATHING reviews of similar products on Amazon... I like this enough that I am going to check out Seagate's larger drives as well.If I run into problems I'll update this review, but right now I'm really happy with both the hardware and the software and can't rave enough about this drive!

I have several other type's of external drives that suck in one way or the other but this one, it actually works! The transfer rate doesn't slow down to a crawl when copying files to it, it doesn't shut down in the middle of a transfer or shut down and disappear, it doesn't need to make several partitions with a drive larger than 2TB.What it does do, it just works the way its supposed to. I will be laying the other external enclosures to rest over the next few weeks and will be replacing them with this unit.

This is a pretty straightforward HD accessory. I used a 500GB Hitachi drive. Remove two srews on the back and then slide the caddy out the front. One thing that takes a second or two to notice is that, to install the drive you need to insert it at a slight angle and sort of shovel the connector inside the tray into the HD power and dat port. If you just try to lay it in the caddy and slide the drive onto the connector it appears that the connector sits too low. This is shown on the installation diagram on the package as a curved arrow. Other than that it's built well. There is no fan or cooling mechanism. The Power Adapter cable is quite short so keep that in mind. I think this was a good value.

A little odd to load and re-close, but nothing difficult... No technical issues at all. Very well made, stable stance, and seems durable. Would buy another if I need another external USB 3.0 case.

Excellent, works perfectly with iMac

I received this product yesterday and am very impressed with it. The outward appearance of sleek silver matches my new iMac perfectly. In fact, my smartalecy (ok, there's no such word) husband put an apple sticker on it, and it actually looks like an apple product. Very easy to hookup with a power AC cord and a USB cord. I plugged it in, and iMac immediately asked me if I wanted to use it for backup, which I did. It utilized USB 3.0 which is super fast, and I have a huge amount of files to back up, which it did nicely.2 Terabytes is plenty of space. I agree with another reviewer that this is indeed a great backup drive for Mac users. Quiet and Fast, you can't go wrong. My only issue is it's a bit pricey and it would be nice to see the price come down somewhat.

Crazy if you don't have one of these ....

A friend of mine is a pro photographer..For him to loose any of his mega thousands of pix would be total loss of income foe him..He has used WD products for years with no problems...(and, full tech support if needed)So, with his endorsement, I bought one for myself...Plugged it in to my iMac and that was it..no formatting , it just sits there and does its thing...Very comforting knowing everything is backed up,including the computer format, should it crash and burn....

Quick and easy as pie. Getting one for my mother, too!

Yes, we should all back up our home computers and few of us do. My IT guy (also known as my husband) has big aspirations in that department, and we have multiple computers intended to serve as backup servers in our home. But that just doesn't work for me. At the end of the day, that's just too much for me to keep up with as he changes things and moves things around. I just want an external drive that's there to back up my stuff if my Mac bites the dust, or for when I upgrade my Mac and quickly want to access files from "the past". And, lemmetellyou, this is the ticket.I plugged it into the wall, and into the computer. I went to my Mac settings and opened Time Machine, and maybe had to click two or three simple, clear setup questions, and it just started rolling on all on its own. I easily enabled automated backups and password protection of backups and settings. I really liked how simple it was to set up. No need to be an expert.Once set up, it started to count down 120 seconds to its first back up. I kept using my computer (web browsing and email mostly), and didn't notice any deterioration of performance once the back up started (might have been different if I'd been doing a lot of graphics or media work). An hour later, I was all backed up. A quick glance at time machine shows me when my next backup will start. A real cakewalk.In fact, it's so easy, I've decided to get one for my mother (who's still learning how to use a thumb drive effectively, just to give you a sense of technical expertise required). While it's true I'll set it up for her, not have her try to set it up on her own, I'm confident that once it is up, she'll never have to worry about it.PROS:- Anyone can use this. It's very easy: just plug it in and open Time Machine.- Mac-ready. No time wasted reformatting the drive for your Mac.- Quiet.- Password protect your backups - set up for that is also super easy.- Elegant looking (for what it's worth, it sits behind my Mac, so I don't see it, for the most part. There is a little bit of the base visibly peeking out from below my screen - but it's not noticeable since the stainless finish matches the Mac exactly.- Stays cool - possibly helped by the well ventilated larger format. FULL DISCLOSURE: I like larger format drives since I had a seagate portable that melted down in an Epic Fail years ago. I lost everything. Since then I neither trust Seagate (superstition on my part) nor small format external drives (IMHO, logically defensible position). I know all drives fail eventually, but I have more confidence in a drive that has an appropriate amount of space to actually ventilate and cool the hardware inside than one that doesn't.- I also like (in the context of getting one for my mother) that it doesn't have Seagate's social media account backup. Just one more thing to get confused by. That being said, some people might consider that a con.CONS:- You pay a Mac Premium. If you more DYI than me, you can probably save $40 buying the non-Mac version. For me, it was worth the peace of mind to know I wouldn't hit any road blocks in the set up. (Of course, you're still saving $150 to $200 over Apple's own back up hardware...)

Installation software did not function
