I have an old external WD hard drive that would not spin up. My first inclination was that the disk had gone bad. However, when I replaced the internal HD in that unit, it still would not spin up. I purchased this unit on a whim and boom, the HDs spun up again. Ever since, this has been powering the ext. HD just fine. It just works!More specifically: The unit has a relatively small form factor in comparison to the one I was replacing. The cords seem properly insulated (not the really thin stuff) and the jack fits snugly.

My Husband miss placed the original cord that went to our external hard-drive, so I wasn't able to get to our family photos on there. So he found this one and it works great. Thanks!

I purchased this power cord to replace an AC/DC adapter on my Western Digital 500 MB Home Edition external hard drive, which had started to fray, causing intermittent shorting problems. Because I use this on gigs, where I access sampled grand piano sounds via MIDI from my keyboard, I need something that is reliable. The gauge of the wire seems much thicker than the original adapter, and the flexible rubber connector where the wire comes out of the adapter is well-designed. I was a little hesitant to spend so much money on an adapter, but considering that Radio Shack charges $40 for something that looked much cheaper, it is a pretty good deal after all.
