Eco Mode lowers your drive’s power consumption when not in use—by up to 40%. As with all of our products, LaCie Backup software comes standard—making automatic backup simple.

I had this pre-ordered for a while from Amazon and was pleasantly surprised when they emailed me that it had shipped. I ordered this and the smaller USB powered drive. I mainly bought this to store all my data and as well as a backup drive so I could create an image of my PC onto it in case of unforeseen problems. Anyways, coming back to the LaCie Porsche Design Hard drive; it's beautifully made, a nice industrial design. It came with a few region specific adapters so if you're travelling you won't be hard pressed to find converters which is an added bonus. The drive runs nice and cool, with no audible sound. The LED on the front light's up a bright white color and looks awesome primarily functioning to display disk activity and power on. It also has a power switch located at the back for manually turning the drive off or on. The added benefit of this drive is that it's USB 3.0 compatible, which makes it really quite quick for transferring larger files.============================Initial Setup============================Quick and painless, as it should be. Plugged in the adapter, powered it on and connected it to the PC, has all the software bundled in, essentially plug and play though requires the drive to be formatted. The good thing is you can set it up so if you have a mac and windows environment, you can format it to NTFS and FAT32 both via partitioning which is made really easy with the LaCie software included.============================Drive & Bundled Accessories============================The drive was nicely packaged and sealed, Amazon did a great job shipping as usual. The drive comes with a USB 3.0 cable which is backward compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1 spec however data transfer naturally is limited to their respective bandwidth. It came with a power adapter with different socket attachments, which is quite convenient when travelling.Pro's-Beautiful Industrial Design-Large Capacity-Very Quiet-Comes with various power socket converters for the power supply-Nicely packaged, and easy to use software to set it up initially.-Very Quick thanks to USB 3.0-2 year international warranty-Awesome LED light, leaves a small refraction on any surface.Con's-Slightly more expensive than competing drives for the amount of storage space (WD, etc)-Genie Backup Manager is sufficient, added features require you to purchase.-Requires a special USB 3.0 cable in case you loose one USB 2.0 won't fit.-Warranty period not as long as other competing drives, 2 years as opposed to 3 years or more.So overall I'm quite pleased with my purchase and I'd recommend this drive to anyone whose looking for a stylish external drive that provides plenty of speed and storage not to mention amazing build quality.

I have many high capacity external hard disk drives that are of 1 Tb size or larger. This Lacie Porsche Design 2 Tb (P'9230) is the second one that has a USB 3.0 interface.While the drive is slightly more expensive than the likes of Seagate and Western Digital, I chose to buy it because of the following reasons:1. Rugged metal enclosure that has a prominent blue/white LED bar to show disk activity.2. It has a beautiful, aesthetic form that makes an elegant design statement.After getting the drive, I discovered a few more pluses:3. It is very quiet, as it has no fan. The metal cabinet apparently dissipates heat efficiently.4. You get 10 Gb of Lacie's Wuala cloud storage for free. The Wuala storage is superior to Dropbox because your files are encrypted before transmission to the cloud, and no one has access to them but you.5. There is also Lacie's Private-Public encryption software for PC and Mac that I recommend you to use right away, before copying any files to the new drive. You will need to create an encrypted volume on the drive. It can be as large as the entire drive, or a fraction of it. Because transfer speed is reduced on an encrypted drive, Lacie recommends a size smaller than 50 Gb. You can create multiple volumes of encrypted drives.6. The Lacie Porsche Design drive has a strong USB connector jack on the drive that is IMO less likely to become defective if you connect and disconnect the USB 3.0 cable often, or if you move the drive around a lot. This is a weakness of the Western Digital MyBook drives, as noted by some Amazon reviewers.Lacie also has a 2 Tb drive for the Mac, which looks exactly like this one, except that it has only a USB 2.0 interface, not USB 3.0. It is sold in the Apple Store for $149.99. The product number is P'9231.Of course you can buy a drive with USB 3.0 interface and use it on Mac systems. It just won't run at the USB 3.0 speed. It does give you the flexibility of using the drive for a variety of operating systems (Windows 7, OS X 10.7 Lion, Linux, etc.) and utilize the increased speed of USB 3.0 when the OS supports it.

This drive was very easy to setup. It's truly plug and play. I run it every day for many hours non-stop, and it's been doing great job of backing up my files. It comes with advanced backup software, that I find very easy and useful. The drive looks and feels very rugged due to its solid aluminum enclosure. The design is just awesome. I'd recommend this product without hesitation.
